ELIZA ROSANNA LAMB BARCHUS (1857-1959)
Eliza Barchus was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 4, 1857. She moved to Portland Oregon in 1880. In 1884 she studied under William Samuel Parrot (1843-1915). He was the foremost artist in Portland at the time. Shortly afterward she began a 50 year artist career. By 1886 she had herself become an art instructor. 'Mt Hood', 'Mt Rainier', the 'Three Sisters' and 'Mt Shasta' in California were her common subjects. She also painted Crater Lake, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Lake Tahoe and occasional commissioned works of nonstandard subjects. John Barchus died in 1899 and from then on Eliza supported her children by painting for the tourist trade.
Exhibitions: She died in Portland on December 31, 1959 at age 102. She was voted "Oregon Artist" by the Oregon State Legislature in 1971. Works located in Oregon Historical Society, Pittock Mansion in Portland, and in the White House during the administrations of Presidents Theodore Roosevelt & Woodrow Wilson.
