Joseph John Englehardt (1867-1915)  aka  J. J. Englehart

Joseph John Englehardt was a Oregon and California artist in the late 19th Century. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 14, 1867. He art education is unknown. He may have been self-taught. It is known that he had a studio in San Francisco on Clay Street in the 1880s and 1890s and lived in Alameda. He painted in Tacoma in the late 1890’s and that later, from 1902-1904, he had a studio in Portland Oregon. In 1910 his address was 1122 College Avenue, Alameda, California. He was a prolific painter whose paintings varied in quality from very good to staving artist works. He did exhibit at the Lewis and Clark Expo in Portland in 1905 but other than that we have little information on him. Englehardt painted for the tourist trade, mostly mountain views of Mount Shasta, Mount Hood, Yosemite and other natural landmarks. These paintings range from small to 7 foot wide and can often be signed with a variation of his name or an alias. He used dozens of aliases and sometimes signed with other artist’s names, leading to some confusion. Several paintings by Englehardt were signed by him with the name J. Delane a Washington state painter and at least a couple of others were signed by him W. Lemos, a noted California artist. One of these Lemos paintings was traded to an Oakland physician along with a couple of  others for medical services rendered. The interesting thing is that the painting does resemble the work of Lemos but the signature is in Englehardt’s script. Paintings by A large collection of Englehardt paintings can be seen at the Baldwin Hotel in The Dalles, Oregon. He was rumored to be an alcoholic, leading to variable quality in his work. He did trade paintings for services such as medical attention and probably bar tabs. He died on April 12, 1915 in Alameda.

Works are located in The Collection of the Baldwin Saloon, Oakland Museum, Society of California Pioneers, Washington State Historical Society, College of Notre Dame in Belmont, Nevada Museum in Reno.
